"You can make plans, but the Lord's purpose will prevail." Proverbs 19:21

Sparks fly when Micara Lee and Garrett Hearth meet for the first time at a city hall meeting, where she tries once again to save the small town she loves from land developers. She believes Garrett Hearth, from one of the town's founding families, is on her side. They begin to fall in love, but eventually the truth comes out.

Disenchanted with his career, Sweet Home, and life in general, Garrett is ready to cash in and get out of town for good. He isn't prepared for his attraction to Micara or her beautiful spirit. It isn't long before her unyielding faith rubs off on him and he starts to see the world around him differently. His faith restored, he and Micara then work as a team to save the legacy of Sweet Home, Texas.

Micara Lee, no matter how beautiful, had stepped into guarded territory. Most people in town already knew what happened. Many had witnessed the darkest day of Garrett's life, so he didn't need to talk about it. Ever. But Micara hadn't lived in Sweet Home at that time--he would have noticed her. She couldn't know anything about what happened.

He lost his faith. He lost his football career. And that wasn't all. His life was packed with so much disappointment and pain that he didn't figure one more person knowing about it would make a difference.

"I was the starting quarterback in my senior year at Sweet Home High. Scouts were looking at me, and I was very close to signing with a university. I just needed to pick which one. The decision was mine. The whole world was mine, for all I knew."

He paused and shook his head as he remembered.

"My girlfriend was head cheerleader. Jayanne Waylon. We were a textbook couple. That summer, before school started, I asked her to marry me and she said yes. We talked a lot about getting married and what our life together would be like. I would play college ball before going pro. It all sounded too good to be true and now I know why."

He waited for Micara to interject with a question or comment, but she remained silent and let him get it all out. He adjusted the sofa cushion behind his head.

"In the second quarter, a direct hit from a linebacker sent my body twisting through the air. I came down with my knee underneath me and...well, the rest is history. It gave a whole new meaning to the term "sacked." I was rushed to the hospital, while my best friend, Brent Berg, finished the game for me. He finished a lot of things for me."

Micara finally spoke. "What do you mean?"

"He took over my life. Jayanne dumped me and hooked up with Brent. They went off to college together and Brent played football. He went pro and they got married. He got my life, and I got sacked. And that's the end of the story."

"No, it isn't." Her voice held an unyielding certainty.

"Excuse me?"

She moved to the floor, closer to him. This time, her nearness made him uncomfortable. What did she mean, 'No, it isn't?'

"You're still alive, so that can't be the end of the story."

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, cover to cover April 18, 2013

I started falling in love with "Garrett" as soon as I saw the cute couple and the bluebonnets on the front. What's inside does not disappoint! The themes of romance and life in a small town are perfectly intertwined in this sweet story. Morrow skillfully captures the speech patterns, attitudes, and challenges of rural communities to enrich her tale of blossoming love that refuses to be denied. There's plenty of spirituality woven into "Garrett", but it's never preachy--just an integral part of the way folks live in this little corner of the world. I don't often re-read a novel, but I'm thinking "Garrett" may be an exception. Do yourself a favor and read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mending Broken Dreams April 17, 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition
The town of Sweet Home, Texas, is on the auction block as developers move in to buy the land from the original founding families. One by one their farms and ranches fall to strip malls and shopping centers. Micara Lee is passionate about stopping the sprawling construction even to the point of taking a stick to a bull dozer which she later realizes as an outrageous reaction.
At town meeting she meets Garrett Hearth. He's the son of one of Sweet Homes' oldest families. He and his brother Gabriel are the last of the children still holding on to the land their parents left them. Garrett was a high school football hero destined for college and the NFL, but a knee injury put him on the sidelines and left him bitter about the way his life turned out. Troubled as he saw his friend, Brent, take over his life and his dreams and even his girl.
Garrett is ready to sell his land and move on. He wants to leave his job as the high school football coach and explore writing children's books, something he's wanted to do since childhood. But he meets Micara.
As they fall in love, he struggles with his life and his decisions. She follows her Christian convictions to love someone who has hurt her. She backs down from her position and prays that the landowners will make the right decision, even Garrett.
Will his love for her and the memory of his parents draw him to the right decision? Or will he make a career change and give up on yet another dream?
Jayna Morrow creates believable, warm characters. Garrett is a delightfully sweet story of love and redemption. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Prepare to shed a few tears. And the special birthday present? Well, that was very special and romantic. You can't go wrong with this book.

OMG...I read this book from cover to cover without putting it down. It is GREAT!!! I felt as though I was a character in the book because I could feel every emotion the characters felt. I felt like I was at the football stadium while everything was taking place. I had to remind myself to breath. I loved it...absolutely loved it. I can hardly wait for the second book. I am indeed a fan for life!!! Congratulations on a job well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet read! May 5, 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"3 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." ~1 Peter 3:1-4 (NIV)

I don't know if this scripture was in the forefront of the author's mind when she wrote GARRETT, but it was certainly the verse that resonated in my mind as I read her first novel. Though the female character, Micara, is not married, it is apparent that she knows this verse and allows it to be a guiding force in her interactions with those around her. In particular, her hearfelt interactions with the male character, Garrett, provide a pathway for his spiritual healing from a disappointing past. GARRETT presents a "sweet" story of ordinary people living in a "sweet" town learning to walk by faith and trust God's direction. I look forward to see what directions God will lead them in the next Sweet Home novel!

I'm not much into romance novels, but this one has lots of heart. A quick read that will make you wistful for small town living. Can't wait to read the sequel. There will be a sequel, right?
