I rarely update on whether I'd achieved my 'goal for now', so thought I'd update. Spent 45 minutes on my studies. I'm learning proofing marks. However, I'm not so sure how that'll go when I'm editing/proofing on the computer simply because the work is on the screen. Unless I start printing work out and editing it that way. Then the proofing marks work. Otherwise, I have no idea how else to connect those dots. I did discover -- when I had no computer ink -- that reading a document on an e-reader is essentially the same as reading a document on paper. I catch mistakes just as easily. Still, some things are lost in translation, like 'spacing', 'indents', in general: formatting. And yet, in this day and age when people (in particular the younger, less-articulated generation) talk pretty much the same way they do on social sites such as Facebook and any instant Message program, who really cares about formatting. They hardly care about spelling mistakes.
Can't tell you how many times I send a long-suffering glance at the ceiling when people insert 'OMG' into their verbal conversations.
I'm just waiting for the first book to be published that is made up entirely of Internet speech short-hand. I'm sure it'll be a big hit with the younger crowd, however, everyone else will shake their heads and lament over the fact that society is growing up to have poor reading and verbal skills. One thing I can say is that they just might be much quieter than we are; because they can't seem to put down their cell phones, look someone directly in the face and hold up their end of a conversation.
I'm sure it'll also send paranoia swirling to new heights. You never know when two of your friends are in the same room with you, and they're texting like mad, that it could be they're discussing the ugly sweater you're wearing, or that piece of spinach in your teeth.
I hadn't intended to go off onto this subject. Wanted only to say I'd accomplished the simple goal I'd set for myself. Right now, I'm experimenting with ideas of company logos. The fun just doesn't end. I'm at my best when I'm being creative.
Goal for now: having more fun with Microsoft Publisher.
