I recently read the book Desparate Dreams. I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. I have also have read Ms. McMahill's book, Marked In Mexico, and if you've read it, I think you would enjoy this one too. The characters are well thought out and the story is very thought provoking. The story line is so thought provoking that I still find myself thinking about parts of the book. It has a unique twist to it, but I won't say more than that because I don't want to give the story away.
Desperate Dreams begins by setting up the reason why Nyla and Ethan MUST get away. It takes a few pages, but don't be fooled into thinking it's a dull read; this is just the proverbial CALM BEFORE THE STORM.
In true McMahill fashion, it's Cowboys against Frightening Future, a future where the government is in complete control and the mindless population is only too willing to give up their rights. Well, most of the population. There are still a few who'll sacrifice their very lives to get out from under its oppressive ruling thumb.
Failure isn't an option for four brave souls. If they don't make it across the border, it'll mean a living death in the Facility--the pet name for a prison where isolation and tampered food breaks the spirits of those incarcerated.
It'll take more than planning and a whole lotta luck for Nyla, Ethan, and their two best friends to get to Mexico. They'll need guts, courage, and strength. But with high-tech Intel, poisonous predators, and nature against them, chances are high they won't reach their goal...
Desperate Dreams is one of those books that makes you hold your breath with suspense-building paranoia, and experience the sense of urgency for the characters. I completely understood Nyla's It's-Now-Or-Never-attitude, and her determination for a future filled with love instead of futility and isolation. If I were in her shoes, I hope that I'd have Nyla's courage and strength to escape a powerful, all-controlling government.
