When I lived overseas, I could never understand how strangers knew my nationality intantly. Without fail, before I said a word, merchants would adddress me in English. That is, until my old shoes wore out and I replaced them with footwear from local shops. What fun it was to be greeted from then on in French, German, Yiddish, and a variety of languages I couldn't recognize! Carlene
