"In Big Horn Storm I wanted to write a nail-biting scene where the heroine was forced to test her horse’s strength. In order to get in the right frame of mind I thought of scenes from several movies which evoked the feelings I wanted to impart on the reader. In Australia when Nulla faces down the cattle on the cliff I couldn’t breathe until it was over. I experienced the same sensation the first time I watched the Man From Snowy River follow the brumbies over the edge. Though not as dramatic, I also called upon an experience I had when I was young while helping with a cattle drive. A couple of tired cows decided to take a detour off the mountain rather than proceed up to the summer grazing grounds and I was tasked with bringing them back since I was on the strongest, most sure-footed horse. Even though stopping or turning back wasn’t an option on the steep slope, I followed and eventually returned the cows to the herd. Memories tend to intensify over time and through retelling, but my recollection of the incident and the movie scenes cited above enabled me to create Niki’s first heart-pounding horseback escape."
