Excerpt
Mother Goodness floated down to a sitting position and hugged Sarah.
“Now, child, what are you fretting about?”
“Tomas gave me instructions to take these to Laney.” She pulled photos from her pocket and held them up for view. “But he didn’t tell me why I should do it, and he gave no hint as to how to go about it.”
“Are you resenting him for this—what you consider neglect on his part?” Mother Goodness’ face and tone glowed with compassion—not censure.
“Oh no, I don’t think so.” She frowned and bit her lip. “Is it possible for angels to worry? I think I’m worried.”
When she smiled, the lines in Mother Goodness’ face increased. “The Mighty One gave you a large capacity for empathy. As a result of this gift, you take on the characteristics of the humans—and they worry and fret a lot. Angels want to succeed, and we are confident we will. Earth’s creatures aspire to achieve but often lack the assurance they will. Make sense?”
Sarah frowned and her eyes glistened. “Are you saying that like the humans, I lack confidence in myself, and as a result I struggle?”
Mother Goodness supplied Sarah a tissue from her gigantic pocket. “Do you have faith in God and His ability?”
“Oh, yes, I do.” Sarah nodded her head vigorously.
“Do you trust yourself to get an assignment done?”
With collapsed wings, Sarah lowered her chin until it almost scraped her chest. She refused to bring herself to meet the eyes of Mother Goodness. “No ma’am. Not always.”
Mother Goodness’ hand slipped under her chin. The Mentor lifted Sarah’s downcast face, and once more, Sarah gazed at her teacher.
“Can you accept that God will work out all things for your benefit, just as He can for the humans who love Him? And you do love Him, don’t you?”
“With all that I am.”
“Do you accept that He loves you?”
Sarah’s lips turned up slightly through her tears. “I know He does.”
“But you don’t believe He will work out all things for your benefit?”
Sarah’s smile vanished and she chewed her lip. “I goof up a lot.”
“Yes, you do. And what happens? The world comes to an end?”
