Birthday Bash Blog Hop...PRIZES, CAKE...

Last year (August), I was casually perusing Smashwords' book listing when I happened upon a certain book. I do believe it was Accident Waiting To Happen
I was struck by the cover and the story line.
It's gorgeous, isn't it!

Without putting too much thought into it, I clicked on the publisher's link and it took me to what was then Inspired Romance Novels. And then I started searching the website, ending up on the Employment page, that's when I noted the ad for acquisition editors.
I'd taken a writing course, a proof reading/copy editing course, and had helped proof for other writers before. Also included on my resume was the fact that'd I'd belonged to critique groups in the past and had even acted as a ghostwriter.
In my mind, that wasn't enough to qualify me for any sort of position in a publishing house. But then family and friends have told I'm my own worst enemy, so I forced myself to apply. The editor-in-chief of the company was quite kind, patiently giving me the opportunity to take the editing aptitude test.
When I say patient, I mean extremely patient!
That weekend my computer decided to give me attitude, refusing to work properly, forcing me to take the test on my laptop; a foreign idea for me. Sure, I'd tapped out a chapter here and there, but it was more of a backup for those times I couldn't access the Internet on my desktop.
After a few botched attempts, I managed to finish the test and send it to Ms. Alley for an evaluation.
Then I held my breath.
I was positive I'd receive a, 'thank you for your time but at this time you're not what our company is looking for.'  Even so, I consoled myself with the fact that I'd tried. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
It didn't take long for the e-mail to come back with Ms. Alley's decision. To my excitement, I passed her test. When I was introduced to the company's authors and editors, I'd received the warmest welcome. I'd been an author with another publishing company a few years earlier but it didn't compare to the level of camaraderie found in Ms. Alley's camp. These writers not only offered advice and support to each other, they also 'had each other's back'.
Now, one year later I can proudly say I work for one of the finest online publishing companies as an editor. And I can also say I'm one of Prism Book Group's writers.

    1. Thanks, Gay. I thought I might bore readers with my PBG story. What I forgot to mention was the sense of 'go back' when I was about to leave the now PBG website. It's not often I experience it, but it was strong that evening :)
