Everything Casey Slaughter counted on is gone. While contemporaries start their families, Casey works two jobs to haul herself out of debt. Friends and family recommend a new husband to solve all her problems, but Casey resists all well-intentioned advice. Although she longs for a soul mate, the last thing her flattened self-esteem needs is more rejection--and comparisons to her beautiful, talented older sister do nothing to enhance Casey's confidence. Unable to have children, she feels she has nothing to offer in marriage. Will bitterness and insecurity destroy her, or can renewed faith in God provide some measure of comfort for this wounded heart? Can Casey ever find love again, or will a string of disasters keep her forever on the run?
“The story is heart warming and real and gives the reader a true perspective of God's gifts. ”Victoria Pitts Caine | 1 reviewer made a similar statement
“Readers who are looking for something different from the same-old same-old will enjoy thistale. ”Lisa J. Lickel
“I enjoyed the love story between Carlos and Casey, but the secondary characters were made very real by Ms. Havel as well. ”Sharon McGregor | 1 reviewer made a similar statement
Havel artfully guides the reader through steps Casey takes to put the divorce behind her. Her most important first step is renewing her faith in a loving God. As Casey opens herself up to God, she embraces the future God has planned for her.
Havel reveals wonderful hues of friendships that support Casey as she moves forward. Although Casey is aware of the lonely places in her heart, she's not looking for romance, but it finds her. The question in Casey's heart is should she do this again?
I loved this book with all its wonderful twists and turns of Casey's life. It's a story that stays with you.
When she acquires a new next-door neighbor, she's assumes the gossip she hears is true. Carlos has no interest in women.
It takes an accident and a devastating hurricane to make her see how wrong her assumption is, and to realize the most important things in life are those intangibles we never see but must reach out for through faith.
This is a delightful love story with believable characters and a clever plot. I enjoyed it immensly.
Added to the above a lower than average self-esteem, Casey spends two years stepping outside her comfort zone, not wildly, but enough to find a happy medium life. She establishes herself in a hobby she enjoys, and even buys a house. During this time, Casey also takes the time to step down from her pity party and listen to that still small voice, inviting her back to fellowship with God. When she realizes there are always two sides to the story and she wasn't a perfect marriage partner, either, she is able to move on.
Casey's new neighbors are both loving and exasperating, as are her co-workers, who enjoy gossip both for fun and for vicarious escapes from their own problems. When a new neighbor moves in, he is ripe for the picking. Casey even listens to some of the gossip and makes up her own mind about Carlos Tucker, who she first meets while he's decked out for...something...in a pirate costume and full make up. But nothing, of course, is what it seems.
Join Casey and her fun family as they all work out their relationships and identities, as they learn who they can trust when the going gets tough, and that the only thing that won't be gone tomorrow is the Lord who is in control of it all.
Havel has created a pleasant read, a sweet story that's a step away from the typical romances. It's a piece of life that's all too real, but a nice diversion from your own. Time passes a little quickly in some spots and there are a few leaps in logic which I had no trouble following. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the setting, and even the hurricane, experienced safely from my chair. Readers who are looking for something different from the same-old same-old will enjoy this tale.
Here today, Gone tomorrow by Carlene Havel was a wonderful read. Carlos and Casey's first meeting led her to wrong conclusions, but through several situations God leads Casey to the truth, to finding her self and love.
Everyone from her mother and sister who lived in her small home town to her friends at the Houston hospital tried to set Casey up with someone, but she felt she had nothing to offer. Once she attained her first goal of buying a house, some unfortunate events took place and she rescued her neighbor Carlos Tucker's home from a fire and a thief. Carlos rushed Casey to the hospital when she cut her hand and she decides he'd make a wonderful friend.
Carlos became Casey's escort for parties and church and she thoroughly enjoys his company, but her mind goes back to their first meeting - when he appeared on her porch with lipstick, eye shadow and a loud silk shirt to claim his dog. She doesn't think he has any interest in woman.
When a tornado crashed down on their neighborhood, Casey and Carlos escaped with their pets and a few possessions and find out God has had a plan for them all along and Casey finds herself in awe of His promises.
Ms. Havel writes a wonderful story. This light romance with truly likable characters kept the book in my hand until it was finished. The story is heart warming and real and gives the reader a true perspective of God's gifts. Well done, Ms. Havel.

This author writes entertaining books. I know anything I read from Ms. Havel will keep my interest, and this one certainly did. I laughed out loud in a few places and was kept in suspense in others. I loved the characters, and I identified with their struggle for survival as they faced unusual circumstances. Ms. Havel manages to craft and weave a story that will keep the reader interested from page one to page end. It's set in Texas, and since the author is a Texas resident, she knows the state well. Good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a cliche romance,September 20, 2013

Havel's newest novel takes the reader into the life of Casey Slaughter, a cliché divorcee working hard to put the pieces of her life together after her cheating husband leaves her for the other woman. Casey never had the opportunity to figure who she was, or who she wanted to be because she was so busy putting her husband through law school, and just shy enough not to talk about her suspicions over her cruddy marriage to anyone else. Everyone has problems sometimes, so it never occurred to her that the problems were not normal.Added to the above a lower than average self-esteem, Casey spends two years stepping outside her comfort zone, not wildly, but enough to find a happy medium life. She establishes herself in a hobby she enjoys, and even buys a house. During this time, Casey also takes the time to step down from her pity party and listen to that still small voice, inviting her back to fellowship with God. There is plenty of romance to go around in this story. I enjoyed the love story between Carlos and Casey, but the secondary characters were made very real by Ms. Havel as well. Once I started reading, I didn't stop until "the end". I thoroughly enjoyed Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.

What a thoroughly enjoyable book. I felt I had joined Casey and Carlos and journeyed along their paths of enlightenment and discovery with them. It is a story of finding love where you least expect it and that people are not always what they seem on first encounter.
