The next: another 3 star: Very Good short story.
And the last: 1 star rating: This was an ok quick read. This was not a book that you read and love the characters and want to know more about them. you never realy bonded with the characters so you dont know and are not intrested in getting to know them. The ending was good.
So, I'm thinking if you didn't really (notice the spelling error in their comment? LOL) bond with the characters and you're not interested in them, why read it? You usually get a sense, right from the beginning of a story, whether it's something you want to finish or not. If I have no interest -- attention-span of a gnat here -- I immediately put it away and never pick it up again. Couldn't have been too bad a read if they carried on straight to the end.
At first, the poor rating and the review bothered me, but I gave it distance and realized it had nothing to do with me and reflected completely on them as a person. Reminded me of a time when my ex and his co-workers received free, expensive jackets from their company. That was when the 3-in-1 coats made their debut and thus were not cheap. They were gorgeous. And, believe it or not, the majority of the employees complained about the coats.
It's amazing how often people exhibit ingratitude, overlook and take for granted things that are freely given (not only stories, jackets and other material goods, but also nature, and affection from their parents, spouses and children). Human nature can be ugly at times. I've been like that, can still be like that, however, I strive to be more gracious, more encouraging and not let my inner critic discourage someone else. It's bad enough when it rips me apart!
Goal for now: writing, critiquing and studies. Not necessarily in that order.
