“There she goes.” Annette Thibodaux nodded toward the window of the café. “Evangeline LeFleur, the prettiest old maid in New Orleans.”
“Sweet face, empty head, if you ask me,” Marian Griffin sniffed. “She really thinks that dreamer is going to come back and marry her some day.”
“He’d better hurry,” Annette said with a chuckle. “Before she gets so old and gray he doesn’t recognize her any more.”
“Even if Antoine LaCavalier should make a little money out there in California, what makes her so sure he’d come back and fetch her?” Marian asked. “I’m sure there are lots of pretty girls out west.”
