I always thought that to have a clean, tidy, organzed home you had to have one specific day to do housework. Turns out that didn't work for me. It wasn't sustainable to do housework one day because the next day the floors needed to be swept and vacuumed again. And dust doesn't take a vacation.
You can imagine how liberating it was to discover Flylady on the Internet. I loved her approach and tips on how to stay on top of housework and clutter by doing a little bit each day, but I quickly found out that I couldn't keep up with the daily reminders and routines.
So I adapted what I learned from Flylady by assigning a different room to a certain day. On those days I dust, vacuum, and mop, and attack clutter. I have six rooms in my apartment, so Sunday is dining room and stairs, Monday is living room, Tuesday is kitchen, Wednesday is bathroom, Thursday is bedroom, Friday is den, and then on Saturday I rest.
I've been doing this routine for a few years and now it's ingrained in me.
I also wait until evening to clean, but that's just me. My most mentally productive time of the day is the morning. I don't want to waste that valuable time dusting.
Being tidy and organized is an ongoing battle for me, but as long as I'm determined to do something to improve my situation, well, that's always a win.
My favorite cleaning tool is a Swiffer Duster with an extension handle.
My tip to clean a floor without breaking out the mop and bucket: Swiffer sweeper, three sheets of Kirkland papertowel (any papertowel will work as long as it's heavy-duty strong), and a spritz of cleaner (I use watered down Mr. Clean). Papertowel instead of Swiffer sheets is much cheaper in my estimation.
I hope I've given you a springboard for you to keep your home functioning properly. To me, the state of one's home is an outward sign of the state of one's mind.
